Leukemia is a name for a number of cancers that damage the body’s blood cell producing ability.

What Blood Cells Do
White blood cells destroy foreign bacteria or cells that harm the body. White blood cells trek through the body, find hazards and destroy them.

Normally, white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow.  Once these cells serve their purpose, they die.  Healthy bone marrow replaces the expired white blood cells with new ones.   When the body is healthy, white blood cells are produced in large number.

When Leukemia develops, it hinders the body's ability to produce correctly performing white blood cells. The white blood cells become cancerous. The cancer cells reproduce rapidly in the bone marrow, choking out the manufacturing of healthy blood cells. The reduction of normal white and red blood cells weakens the body's immune system and causes anemia. People who suffer from leukemia therefore often suffer from infections and are often unable to do strenuous physical activity.

Causes
Leukemia has been linked to benzene or radiation.  Long term exposure of benzene often occurs on the job.  If you have worked for oil companies or chemical companies, your may have been exposed benzene fumes. Benzene is a chemical used often in the production of plastics and other chemical products. Benzene has a sweet smell and workers in petroleum industries, such as on tankers, often are heavily exposed to benzene fumes.

Symptoms of leukemia may include bruising, bleeding, paleness, poor healing of cuts, paleness or recurrent infections.

Victims of benzene poisoning and their families may be entitled to compensation for pain and suffering and to help get the best treatment.  Don’t wait for a statute of limitations to run out.  Call the law offices of Carabin & Shaw today.
